HOW TO WRITE AN IMPRESSIVE COVER LETTER
Is it really necessary to write a cover letter when you apply for a job? Does anyone really read it?
In most cases, the answer to both questions is a resounding yes. Writing an impressive cover letter gives you an opportunity to tell prospective employers who you are and why you are the best candidate for the job.
What is a cover letter?
A cover letter is a single-page document that accompany your CV in job applications. It can also be in the body of your email application when sending your CVs. This letter is your means of communicating your value and convincing the prospective employer to engage you and your application further. It should highlight a brief about you, capture your education, skills, experience and achievements, in relation to the position you are applying for.
What should be the structure of your cover letter?
- Header with the date and contact information
- Salutation or greeting
- Opening paragraph
- Middle paragraph(s)
- Closing paragraph
- Letter ending and signature
How to write a cover letter in 6 steps
1. Header
This section should include your contact information, date of application, and recipient’s contact information. If you’d like, you can also center your name and address at the top of the page, mirroring the way it looks on your resume.
Cover letter header template:
Your name
Your city and ZIP code
Your phone number
Your email address
Date
Name of recipient
Title of recipient
Company name
Company address
2. Salutation
Address your letter to the Hiring Manager or Human Resources Manager where you are not sure of who will be reviewing your application. If you’re unable to confirm the gender of the person reviewing your application, it is best to use a gender-neutral greeting such as “Dear [first and last name]” or “Dear [position title].”
Example greetings:
Dear Hiring Manager,
Dear Bola Adeyemi,
Dear Mr. James,
3. Opening paragraph
In this paragraph, mention the job title you’re applying and express your specific interest in the role and company. Also, briefly state the main experience or qualification you have that makes you a good fit. The first section of your cover letter is also the first impression the reader will have of you, so it is important to appeal to that person quickly and briefly.
Example:
“I’m excited to apply for the Graphic Designer position at XYZ Company I found on the MarbleClear website. I am passionate about creating visually stunning designs that help brands grow. With more than 3 years of experience designing memorable advertising campaigns, I think I could be a great addition to XYZ Company as a Graphic Designer.
4. Middle paragraph
Discuss why you are a fit for the position and the company. Describe your background (skills, accomplishments, and abilities) and elaborate on your training and experiences as they directly relate to the position for which you are applying.
Example:
I have experience as a freelance and in-house graphic designer, and I have worked on a range of print, interactive and digital design projects. Currently, I am the Graphic Designer at 123 Technology, where I design all communication materials and advertising campaigns. Our most recent campaign, which I worked on in conjunction with the marketing team, increased our sales by 20% since launch. The campaign was also shortlisted for a 2022 Design Award.
5. Closing paragraph
In this paragraph, you want the reader to have the impression you are truly passionate about the position and working for their company. So, be enthusiastic and confident. Illustrate your ability to fit into the company culture and how your personality and work ethic is exactly what they are looking for.
Example:
“If I am offered this position, I will be ready to hit the ground running and help XYZ Company exceed its own expectations for success.”
6. Ending and Signature
You should end your cover letter with a paragraph that summarizes the reasons you are applying for the role and why you would be a great fit. Keep the cover letter conclusion brief and explain that you look forward to hearing from the employer with the next steps. End with your signature at the bottom.
Example:
I’m looking forward to bringing my creativity, teamwork, and branding skills to XYZ Company. I would love to chat more about the position. Please feel free to call me anytime to set up an interview.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Conclusively, don’t forget to use your own voice in your cover letter. It doesn’t have to be a dry and unfriendly essay, it should be the opposite.
